It’s Sunday and El-P is still slept on.

El-P, pronounced L-P and short for El-Producto, is a rapper/producer from Brooklyn. He began his career in 1992 as a part of the historic underground group Company Flow.

After the group disbanded he started his own lable, Def Jux, a name that holds significant weight in underground hip hop lore/ The label was home to acts such as Aesop Rock, Cage, Murs and Del the Funky Homosapien, just to name a few.

Since then he has released multiple solo projects, and most recently, co-founded Run The Jewels.

With the duo on their 4th successful album it seems El-P has finally been able to reach audiences that weren’t accessible to his earlier acts, and yet many fans say all they know of RTJ is his counterpart Killer Mike.

So how can someone with a 30-year career like that still be slept on? He has always been on the cutting edge of hip hop, both lyrically and musically. His beats are raw and gritty, but also weird and out there. His flows are dense, multi-syllable, multi-rhymed bars that strike a creative balance between heavy and light subject matter, often turning between them on a dime. And while his music doesn’t necessarily match the requirements for mass consumption, it’s a mystery how someone like El-P can be so slept on.
