Slept On Sunday shines a light on the best of what’s slept on in music and culture.
You may know him as Avatar Benji. or just Benji. Regardless, the Pittsburgh native is on the rise and he is absolutely someone that should be on your radar. Chances are you have already seen him around. For Spillage Village fans, you would have seen him on their latest album Spilligion, featuring artists like JID, EARTHGANG, and Mereba. All of which Benji. got a chance to collaborate with. After all, he is an official member of the collective.
Back in 2019, he also had the amazing opportunity to perform as an opening act for EARTHGANG, along with Guapdad 4000, on their ‘Welcome To Mirrorland’ tour.
And though these collaborations with Spillage Village are exciting, these successes are just the tip of the iceberg of what Benji. can actually do. Take a deeper look into his career and you’ll quickly find that he is a solo artist and a multi-talented musician as well. In an interview with mp3du.com, Benji. shares that he started playing drums at the age of 4 and has added four other instruments to his arsenal since then.
Among those instruments is the bass. You can see him left of center (in the orange shirt) playing a beautiful 5 string bass with Spillage Village for their performance at NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert.
Benji. further shows his range on his singles. Songs like Tamale and Family Ties show not only his songwriting ability but also his vocal talent. Over bouncy trap beats, no less. If you discovered Benji. through his musicianship with acts like Spillage Village, this may be surprising at first. But it doesn’t take long to warm up to his style over a Trap sound. It’s all incredibly smooth and soulful.
Benji. has proven himself as a talent to take seriously. With an album on the horizon the future is bright. So put Avatar Benji. on your radar because the come up is real.
